From The Resurgence

1. Make sure your faith is only something you live out in public

Go to church… at least most of the time. Make sure you agree with what you hear the preacher say, and affirm on the way home what was said especially when it has to do with your kids obeying, but let it stop there. Don’t read your bible at home. The pastor will say everything you need to hear on Sundays. Don’t engage your children in questions they have concerning Jesus and God. Live like you want to live during the week so that your kids can see that duplicity is ok.

2. Pray only in front of people

The only times you need to pray are when your family is over, Holiday meals, when someone is sick, and when you want something. Besides that, don’t bother. Your kids will see you pray when other people are watching, no need to do it with them in private.

3. Focus on your morals

Make sure you insist your kids be honest with you. Let them know it is the right thing for them to do, but then feel free to lie in your own life and disregard the need to tell them and others the truth. Get very angry with your children when they say words that are “naughty” and “bad”, but post, read, watch, and say whatever you want on TV, Facebook, and Twitter. Make sure you focus on being a good person. Be ambiguous about what this means.

4. Give financially as long as it doesn’t impede your needs

Make a big deal out of giving at church. Stress the need to your children the value of tithing, while not giving sacrificially yourself. Allow them to see you spend a ton of money on what you want, while negating your command from scripture to give sacrificially.

5. Make church community a priority. As long as there is nothing else you want to do

Hey, you are a church going family, right? I mean, that’s what you tell your friends and family anyways. Make sure you attend on Sundays. As long as you didn’t stay up too late Saturday night. Or your family isn’t having a big bar-b-que. Or the big game isn’t on. Or this week you just don’t feel like it. Or… I mean, you are church going family so what’s the big deal?

Photo

He explained that a true sign of spiritual maturity are those who do not just read the Bible to get through it, but mediate on it and see what the Lord is trying to say to them. I want to share with you all a tool I have used to read through the entire Bible in a nice, simple, and structured way. This past Sunday I began to use this tool over again as my daily devotional in reading and meditating on his word everyday.

When I first got my ESV Study Bible I freaked out by how useful it was. I literally used it for every class in Bible College and it became my first reference to understanding difficult passages. In the back of the Study Bible is a reading plan that I thought was really well laid out and easy to follow. There are four readings for each day. These readings are divided into four main sections: Psalms and Wisdom Literature; Pentateuch and the History of Israel; Chronicles and Prophets; and Gospels and Epistles.

The ESV folks have created a pdf version that you can print off and use with your own personal Bible.

If you are like me and love technology, you may use your iPhone, iTouch, iPad, Blackberry, or Droid to read your Bible. Well I have found the perfect app for you!

YouVersion has created a Bible app that is probably the most successful and used Bible app out there! With the ability to have any number of translations all in a free app is really wonderful! They have a tab in their app that looks like a little calendar that lets you choose from all kinds of different reading plans. From topical plans to reading the whole Bible in one-year plans. The thing that got me hooked was that they had the ESV Reading Plan among their various reading plans! To use this you need to create an account with YouVersion. Trust me! If you have the app, you know it will be worth it.

Disclaimer: You have to do what you can for your own walk with the Lord. For some, reading the whole Bible in a year might be too fast! I know it was for me the first time I did it. I barely retained any of it. So my suggestion to you is, check out all the different reading plans that are out their. Do some research! See what works for you. Ask your pastor and see what he thinks. Send me an email and I can even suggest a few others. The point is, get in the Word. You wont grow if you are not in it daily!

How to drink water like a boss.

How to drink water like a boss.

Is love winning in Japan?

There are two things I have not written about in my blog as of yet: Rob Bell’s new book Love Wins and the disaster in Japan. I haven’t written much about Bell because everyone else already is. I have not written about Japan because I am at a loss of words at the devastation. What made me bring these two topic together today was from watching this interview with Martin Bashir and Rob Bell.

The interview is mainly about the book and the theological storm it has brewed among conservative theologians. Martin Bashir even shows passion about how he feels Rob Bell has amended the Gospel. Instead of discussing that (which if you want to see the whole chronology of bloggers discussing this topic, the resurgence has been nice enough to bundle it here) I want to dive into the first topic of the interview.

Bashir basically asks Bell what should we do with the devastation in Japan? Where is God in this? He leads with a question that I believe Christians and non-Christians alike probably have pondered when devastation like this, Katrina, or any other natural disaster. The statement that he asks Bell to comment on is this: “If God allows this type of devastation to happen then God is either all powerful but does not care about the people in Japan or he does care and is not all powerful”. Bell begins by saying, “God does care! “ And I agree with him! He goes on to talk about the Bible being mainly a story of restoration. Though I agree with him, I am not sure where he was going with that. After Bashir restated the question, Bell said, “it is a paradox” which I do and don’t agree with.

I think these types of questions stem from a larger question: “How can a loving God allow suffering?”. To answer this difficult question, we need to know a few things.

God does care

Colossians 1:19 talks about that if the fullness of God was pleased to dwell in Christ, then it is safe to say that Jesus’ feelings and sufferings are an authentic reflection of the feelings and sufferings of God himself. He wept over Jerusalem because of their blatant rejection of the O.T. prophets and his Son (see Luke 19:41-44). The writer to the Hebrews said, “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses” (Hebrews 4:15). God does care and he loves everyone. The Bible says, “For I [God] have no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Lord GOD; so turn, and live” (Ezekiel 18:32). God cares about people and his creation. When Jonah was angry at God because he did not pour his wrath out on Nineveh, God responded, “And should not I pity Nineveh, that great city, in which there are more than 120,000 persons who do not know their right hand from their left, and also much cattle?” (Jonah 4:11). God knows that if he destroyed Nineveh, like he did with Sodom and Gomorrah, everything would be destroyed: people, animals, trees, everything! God grieves for his creation because he loves it and as he said in Genesis, it is “good”. So Bell is right! God does care! He cares a lot about the people in Japan. Every person who has died, been injured, misplaced or just lost their homes, God cares for each and every one of them.

God is all-powerful.

“For I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me, declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose,’ calling a bird of prey from the east, the man of my counsel from a far country. I have spoken, and I will bring it to pass; I have purposed, and I will do it “ (Isaiah 46:9b-11).
God is saying that he alone is in charge. He sees the end of time from the beginning. He knows more than us because he sees all of time right now. And in that huge, brain-exploding concept of God being outside of time, he still controls even the tiniest things on earth. Matt Chandler says, “So, you’ve got this colossus God who is hard to get our head around, who looks down at earth and sees not a moment, but sees all of the moments, who, in this gigantic spectrum, still governs
to the bird that hunts.” So if a hawk picks up a mouse it is because God made the hawk do it. God governs and controls everything because he is sovereign over everything. He is sovereign over the placement of each star in the sky to where you live and how you got there. You are where you are right now because God put you there. The power and sovereignty of God is shared by no other. He alone is this powerful and this mighty (See Job 38 to see how big he is compared to us).

Natural Disasters

We need to make something clear. When we discuss 9/11 vs. the tsunami in Japan, two very different things happened. On 9/11, sinful and depraved people acted like sinful and depraved people. Asking, “where was God on 9/11?” would be the same as “where was God when Jeffrey Dahmer killed all those people?”. People do sinful things out of a sinful heart. At times, God allows the depraved to be depraved. With the tsunami, or any other natural disaster, we need to remember a few things about God:

He hold’s all things together (Colossians 1:16-17)

Meaning that the same way Christ holds the universe in order and it is not all in chaos, Christ also holds hurricanes, tornadoes and even tsunamis together. He cannot only create this weather but he also controls it.

God uses natural disasters to display his judgment.

John Piper got a lot of heat for saying that the tornadoes that hit the Lutheran church was sent by God as judgment for the Lutheran church because of the possibility of them ordaining homosexual ministers (link). He explained his reasoning for it here. But there is something that John Piper brings to our attention that we have to realize about the character and nature of God. God does use naturals disasters to display his judgment. Deuteronomy 11:17 and Numbers 16:30-34 are just two examples in the Old Testament when God used natural disasters to display his righteous anger towards man. This idea isn’t just an Old Testament idea. We see in Revelation that God will allow and even bring forth many natural disasters to display his righteous judgment. This is a side of God that people don’t like. When God is actually displaying his wrath and justice. However, it would be irresponsible of me as a pastor to deny this very important characteristic of God. Our God is just and holy and must punish sin, and he does.

Natural Disasters exist because of our sin.

What I believe is most often the case with natural disasters is that, since Adam and Eve ate the fruit in the garden, the whole world is under a curse and natural disasters are evidence of the curse. In Genesis 3:17, God tells Adam and Eve that, due to their transgression, all of creation is going to suffer. Later we see in Romans 8:19-22, that creation is groaning for God to save all his people so that creation can be restored to how it was intended to be like. Currently, the effects of our sin on creation is displayed by every hurricane, tornado, earthquake and tsunami that runs through and over creation. Sinful humanity can honestly say that natural disasters exist because of the sin problem that lives inside all of us.

The Larger question.

We have to address this as well. The question isn’t “where is God in the midst of natural disasters?” but rather, “Why does God permit and allow it?” When discussing the tornadoes that ran through Minneapolis, John Piper brought up a passage from Luke 13:1-5. In this passage Jesus uses a terrible disaster to where 18 people died because a tower fell on them to explain that life is short and that men must repent or they too will perish. All disasters, man-made or natural are allowed or caused to have people think more on an eternal perspective and examine their lives. After 9/11, millions of churches were filled because people realized that after something as catastrophic as planes running into buildings, they needed to see what their standing was with God. Granted, after the “spiritual-high” wears off, most people go back to their lives and their sin but some do have life-changing experiences, spiritually speaking, after disasters like this happen.

The reality is, no matter where you are or where you live, you too could have been easily swept away by the waves of a tsunami. If not a tsunami, a hurricane or a tornado could have happened. Life on this cursed planet is unpredictable and things happen quickly. But while we are still being spared, we should be praising God that he has continued to show mercy and grace to both his people and to his enemies because none of us deserve this kind of grace. Where I live, Tampa, has been spared for many years now from any kind of serious damage due to a hurricane. It literally seems like when a hurricane gets near or is projected to go through Tampa, something happens and it goes around. Every summer that goes by I am just amazed by the grace he has showed this city. Tampa could easily have been affected the way Katrina did Louisiana.

Use this disaster in Japan to do a few things:

Pray for the people who have died, lost loved ones, people who are still missing, the injured, and the people who have lost their homes and other property.

Pray for the missionaries and pastors who are trying to figure out what they can do to give God the most glory in the midst of this disaster.

Praise God for the mercy he has shown you.

Pray and examine your own life. Examine the idea that life can be gone in a blink of an eye and see what are you doing for the glory of God. We all can die tomorrow and what we do for the Lord on this side of eternity is really the only thing that matters.

Do you know that up until that point, there had been nearly 100 years of air travel where no terrorist hijacked a plane and crashed it into a building, and no one ever went on the Larry King Show. No one ever went on the Larry King Show and said this, “How awesome is God that for the last 100 years nobody hijacked a plane and crashed it into a building.? How awesome is He? How gracious is He? How beautiful is He that He’s protected us in such ways?” So He gets absolutely no credit for the beautiful day and every ounce of blame for the horrific one. Blasphemy. Yeah, it’s who we are. We were talking about what the Lord is teaching us in ministry and how we were growing as a result of our ministry. As I was describing my youth group to him, he laughed because I told him that the majority of my kids are homeschooled kids! I asked him why that was funny and he simply said, “I expected your youth group to be more like you.”

As I thought about this over the past week, I kept thinking about how I thought my youth ministry was going more like me too. I went to public school; I was more “urban” (that is a nice way of saying I wore baggy jeans, tall T’s, and listened to hip hop); my dad really wasn’t there for me when I was growing up, and I didn’t take my walk seriously until after I graduated from high school.

So, as I was in Bible College, I was thinking of all the scenarios I would be dealing with. Confronting kids doing drugs, talking to the boy-crazy girls, telling kids to stop listening to Drake - this is what I was expecting to do.

Lo and behold, my first ministry job was mainly homeschooled kids. It is an anomaly! I have learned a lot about dealing with homeschooled kids. If you are in Bible College, you are about to enter into ministry, and have no clue what to expect if you get 10 Homeschooled kids in your youth group, here are some things to be prepared for!

They are busier than the public school kids.

When you think homeschooled what comes to mind? I think of a kid in his PJs doing math in his backyard eating a peanut butter and banana sandwich. I have always thought homeschooled kids had it made. I imagined them being done with school by noon and watching Nick Jr, until their friends get home so they can chat with them on Facebook. In reality, homeschooled kids are some of the busiest kids I know. They are either doing every sport imaginable, doing other extracurricular stuff like dance or drama, or they are dual enrolled with a college getting credits. So planning youth events around the school calendar is hard because kids are so busy!

They are not as nerdy as you think

I guess since my preconceived notion was that homeschooled kids just stayed at home and watched Nick Jr. while eating a peanut butter and banana sandwiches, I automatically considered them being socially awkward. Truth is, these kids are not. At least mine are not. They have many times defended their status as homeschooled and made it clear they are not homeschoolers. (Don’t know the difference? Watch this.) The main difference between homeschooled kids and public school kids that I have noticed is that they know the different times to use they’re, there, and their.

They are smarter than you.

The joke about homeschooled kids is that they are automatically smarter than everyone their age. I can’t say this is universally true but this is true in my youth group. I didn’t start going to church until I was in middle school, so I missed all my “felt-board” theology. I didn’t grow up wanting to be David or in my free time play with my Noah’s Arch coloring book. With that said, all of my Old Testament knowledge came from Bible College. It was actually intimidating at times to bring up Old Testament stories to the youth because I was afraid I would mispronounce Maher-shalal-hash-baz. The benefit to this is that I can go deep in terms of teaching kids theology and doctrine, and they can keep up. They are doing church history, reading guys like Augustine and Calvin. When I was in high school, I was still reading Dr. Seuss. What is great is that these kids challenge the other kids to get in the Word and to listen in class!

The reality is that homeschooled kids are no different than public school kids. They just learn in a different venue and under a different curriculum. Homeschooled kids can still be boy-crazy, they still struggle with sins like every other teenager, and yes, they even listen to Drake.

Also, don’t misunderstand what I am saying. I have a few public school kids in my youth group too! And they are freaks for Jesus! They, too, are nothing like me when I was in high school.

I love it though! I love how you can have preconceived notions on how things could or should be like, and God flips the script on you and gives you none of what you expected. My kids in my youth group were nothing like me in high school and praise God for that. I was a handful. Ask my youth pastor. But for the glory of God, I have been placed in a youth group with kids who love the Lord, with parents who love the Lord and love their kids, and in a church who loves the Lord and loves families!

A letter to Justin Bieber

Dear Justin Bieber,

I believe you are a Christian. I think you are a good kid. Honestly! You seem pretty clean cut and, as a youth pastor of mostly homeschooled kids, I hear about you a lot. With your documentary coming out, your birthday being yesterday, and all the hype that surrounds you, your name is brought up many times when I am with my youth. I haven’t seen the movie yet. I will wait until it hits Netflix. But I promise I will watch it!

I have the fever. I have had it long before your documentary. I got it when I watched the episode of Shaq vs. and Shaq challenged you to a dance off and performed with you on stage. I was impressed with your skills! You can dance, sing, play basketball, and even bowl. But I was also impressed that you were humble too! You seem like a good kid with a good head on your shoulders.

I hear that you pray before every show! I would too if I had to be on stage in front of thousands of pre-teen girls screaming. I read that you denounced any affiliation with the Illuminati. That is more than Jay-Z has done! Your mom seems pretty legit too!

So after reading blog post after blog post after blog post about your faith, I want to guide you to your next step in your walk. I want you to take your faith to the next level. I believe once you learn this, your lyrics will not be so much “Baby, baby, baby, ohhhhh” and more “Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Savesssss”

Let me teach you Calvinism.

The reason why I want to introduce you to Calvinism is because, even though you have performed with guys like Usher and Luda, I want you to perform with better artists, like Lecrae and Trip Lee.

Let’s be real though, these guys won’t get up with any fluff Christianity. Don’t get me wrong; I am not trying to put you down, because we all have to start somewhere, but it is time to get off the milk and eat meat! You know what I mean? OK, let me explain it to you the best I can and in the best way you can understand it!

Calvinism has a cool acronym: “T.U.L.I.P.” Let me break it down for you!

Total Depravity – There was this awesome guy names John Frame who defines it as this:

“Although fallen persons are capable of externally good acts (acts that are good for society), they cannot do anything really good, i.e., pleasing to God (Rom. 8:8). God, however, looks on the heart. And from his ultimate standpoint, fallen man has no goodness, in thought, word, or deed. He is therefore incapable of contributing anything to his salvation.”

Let me try to explain how you can understand. You have a song called heartache, and one of your lyrics is this,

“Nothing can cure my headache/ Cause im experiencing what they call heartbreak/ Its gonna hurt worse, as long as I stay here”

Because of our sin we have an eternal headache: the headache of being separated from the loving kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ because of our sin. And just like there is no cure for your headache, we have no cure for our headache because we are not righteous. Only Christ can cure our headache. There is nothing we can do on our own to earn or contribute to our salvation. It is only God that can work in us because we are wicked. That line you have is pretty profound, “its gonna hurt worse, as long as I stay here” You are right! The longer you stay in your depravity the worse it will get! Hell is no fun! The wrath of God for all eternity is no fun at all! It is terrible! But God has a solution to remedy our eternal headache of sin and depravity.

Unconditional Election - There was a professor of Systematic theology at Calvin Theological Seminary who defined this point as:

“Union between Christ and his people was planned already in eternity, in the sovereign pretemporal decision whereby God the Father selected us as his own. Christ himself was chosen to be our Savior before the creation of the world (1 Pet. 1:20); Ephesians 1:4 teaches us that when the Father chose Christ, he also chose us.”

In your song You should pick me, you say:

“you’re the finest girl I’ve ever seen and I wanted you to know this / that every guy you meet ends up having feelings for you / you can have any of ‘em, you can take your pick / but you better check with me / girl, I promise I’m legit”

You describe a girl choosing the guy whom she shall court next and you seem to understand that she has the free choice to choose whom she wants. The issue with your song is, of course, you are pleading your case as to why you should be chosen. This may work in the courting world but God’s decision is unconditional. He chooses whom he wants in his family, not based on any merit or talent inside of you, but solely on his free and unconditional will to love whom He wants.

Limited Atonement – This point addresses the purpose of the atoning death of Christ. It maintains that God’s design and intent in sending Christ to die on the cross was to pay for the sins and secure the redemption of those whom God has predetermined to save, namely the elect. Therefore, the primary benefits of his death (especially as an atonement) were designed for and accrue only to believers. A dude named R. L. Dabney said, “Christ’s sacrifice has purchased and provided for the effectual calling of the elect, with all the graces which insure their faith, repentance, justification, perseverance, and glorification.”

Now let me say this Biebs (can I call you Biebs?). I don’t totally get down with this point! I am what they call a 4.5 Calvinist. So instead of digging through your lyrics to find a good example to explain this point, when you have an hour, like the next time you fly to Tokyo or something, listen to this sermon by Mark Driscoll. It is really good.

Irresistible Grace – Justin, I am sure you have a Bible. If you don’t, get an ESV. Trust me, when you get up with Lecrae and the rest of the 116 clique, you don’t want to try to get down with a Bible study and have The Message. They will all look at you funny. It’s not a good look. I got your back dawg! The Bible says:

All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out. For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day. …No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day.

-John 6:37-39 and 44

All this is to say, everyone who is chosen will be saved.

You have a song called Swag’s Mean there is a lyric that says:

“Yeah, she want me cause my
(Swag’s so mean)
I know I want her cause her
(Swag’s so mean)
You know you got it when your
(Swag’s so mean)
Swag’s mean, Ah-Swag’s mean”

That has nothing to do with Irresistible Grace but I just thought it was a funny lyric. So yeah, if God chose you, you will be saved, you will see life change, and you will be have a new heart.

Perseverance of the Saints - A really smart guy named Louis Berkhof said:

“Perseverance may be defined as that continuous operation of the Holy Spirit in the believer, by which the work of divine grace that is begun in the heart is continued and brought to competition. It is because God never forsakes His work that believers continue to stand to the very end.”

Your song Baby’s first verse is:

“You know you love me, I know you care
Just shout whenever, and I’ll be there
You are my love, you are my heart
And we will never, ever, ever be apart”

Though that girl you were with may have left you, God will never let you go. If you truly are His elect there is nothing you can do to lose your salvation. He will bring to completion what He starts.

JB, I hope this helps. I expect you to find Lecrae on twitter and tell him, “I am a Calvinist! Get on my next album!” Your album will go triple platinum! Trust me! I will be praying for you! If you have any questions, hit me up! Give Him Glory!

Sincerely, Frank

P.S. – Stop writing songs about girls. Selena probably doesn’t like it. I want to hear you write a worship song. “Never Say Never to Jesus!” See, it is so easy!

AlbertMohler.com – Universalism as a Lure?
